Introduction to Auditory Verbal Therapy (AVT)
13.–14.6.2024, 9.00–16.00 (UTC+3)
Many therapists have a child who is deaf on their caseload, with very little information about how to make hearing technology (hearing aids, cochlear implants) work for that child. How do we evaluate what they can hear? What are they capable of learning? Will they be able to listen? Will they develop speech that people can understand?
These are difficult questions, and fear of doing the wrong thing makes us fall back on visual communication. This reassures us, because we can see it working! BUT… with more knowledge and skill, perhaps we could provide amazing opportunities for these children to grow up participating fully in their mainly hearing family and culture.
This course will provide an introduction to the use of state-of-the-art hearing technology and family participation to support listening and talking in children who are deaf. We will have presentations, video, discussion, and we may even be able to offer live demonstrations of AVT in action.
Place: The course will be organized as a hybrid event on site in Tampere and through Zoom online.
