I work as a speech and language therapist in primary healthcare and the private sector. I mainly work with adults who have difficulties understanding, planning and producing speech, voice problems or swallowing difficulties. Most of my experience and training has focused on assessing and treating swallowing difficulties, voice problems, and difficulties with understanding and producing speech.
I aim to keep learning through regular training. For example, I have completed training in Lee Silverman Voice Treatment and Oral Placement Therapy, Level 1. In speech and language therapy, I use drawing, written key words, word lists and pictures to support understanding and speech production. I am also familiar with augmentative and alternative communication methods, such as communication books and communication apps on a tablet.
Therapy can take place at the clinic, in the client’s home, in supported accommodation or remotely. I find it rewarding to work in the client’s everyday environment, because speech and language therapy works best as a team effort involving the client, the people close to them and the therapist. Together, the team can plan everyday life outside therapy sessions to support rehabilitation as effectively as possible.
